Amanda Pitt

Amanda Pitt was a financial analyst for Baylor and UT Southwestern Medical Center after receiving an MBA degree, when she decided to fulfill a childhood dream of becoming a nurse. To this end, Amanda applied with the Career Development program upon acceptance into the RN program at Grayson College in Denison, Texas. During two and a half short years of prerequisites and nursing school, she and her husband had two babies and moved three times to different cities. Amanda ended up with an hour commute one way to Grayson College from the Denton area for her last year of nursing school, on top of childcare costs for an infant and a one and a half year old. Meanwhile her husband whose field of work is commercial construction management changed jobs as well. In spite of the hardships, Amanda graduated magna cum laude from her nursing class of 63 students. She now commutes from the Denton area to Dallas where she is completing a residency in acute care at Parkland Hospital. Amanda is now setting her goals even higher as she contemplates furthering her clinical education at the graduate and doctoral levels.

Amanda believes, "No matter how difficult life gets, if you never give up on your dreams, block out the naysayers and surround yourself with people who love and believe in you, there is nothing you cannot accomplish! I am so grateful to all of the people who made my dream possible, with special thanks to the Choctaw Nation. Lauren English and the Career Development team were the green light I needed to keep going. Without their assistance, I don't know if I would have been able to make a career change at this point in my life. Thank you for helping make my dreams a reality."

Writing Cover Letters that Get Attention
By AAEE on September 12, 2012 2:28 PM | No comments

Whenever you send your resume to a school district to be considered for a teaching, coaching or administrative position you should always include a well-crafted cover letter. Effective cover letters are clear, to the point, and brief. The cover letter should convey information in three to four paragraphs that consist of the opening, the body and the closing.

The best way to craft a good cover letter is by working from the job description or job posting announcement, making reference to how you have demonstrated the skills required or knowledge necessary to fulfill the stated responsibilities.

A cover letter should accomplish six things:
1. Introduce who you are and why you are writing to the school district, targeting your resume toward a specific person (usually the Human Resources Director or Superintendent)

2. Present an overview of your qualifications including your passion for teaching, coaching, or leadership in education

3. Demonstrate how you are prepared to contribute and meet the needs of students by giving an example of your teaching, coaching, or leadership success More.

Choctaw Asset Building News....

The Choctaw Asset Building (CAB) program is now taking applications for CAB2. CAB2 is the second matched savings program offered by CAB. Participants in CAB2 can save for a first time home purchase, to pay for education, or to start or expand a small business. CAB2 will match up to $2000 of participants' savings $2 to $1 for savings for education or entrepreneurship or $3 to $1 for a first time home purchase. Participants open a savings account with $50 and then save at least $25 each month for at least six months. Participants can save for as long as 3 years. While they are saving participants receive personal financial education, asset training that is specific to their asset choice, and financial/credit counseling if needed. The qualifications to participate in CAB1 or CAB2 are as follows:

  1. Must be a Choctaw Tribal Member
  2. Must have participated in Choctaw Career Development
  3. Must live within the service area, which is the entire state of Oklahoma, the 5 counties in Arkansas that border the Choctaw Nation's boundaries, and the 5 counties in Texas that also border the Choctaw Nation's boundaries.
  4. Must meet the income guidelines

CAB clients that have successfully completed CAB1 are eligible to participate in CAB2, if they still meet the qualifications. This is a great opportunity for those who were able to use CAB1 for part of their education, but still need assistance and for those who have used CAB1 to start businesses, but now need to expand.   Spaces are limited so interested parties should apply quickly. More information, including the CAB application and the income guidelines, can be found at
